About Ferroviária

History

Ferroviária is a football team that prides itself on its history and acts at present to achieve even greater future. Founded on April 12, 1950 in Araraquara by a group of former employees of the company Ferrocarril Araraquara (EFA), the team has consolidated itself along further decades amongst the most beloved ones in Brazil.

Along its history, the team revealed players such as Bazani, Dudu, Téia, Baiano, Wilson Carrasco, Mauro Pastor, Vica among other celebrities who wore the bordeaux shirt and shone later in other Brazilian football teams. Nowadays, the team management is led by a professional attitude in every decision to be made.

As its beginnings, in a meeting chaired by Antônio Tavares Pereira Lima, the foundation of Ferroviária was set, and the use of the colors white and bordeaux were defined, as well the emblem that resembled the image and coined the name of the Railway System in Araraquara (EFA) wirtten backwards, and meaning Associação Ferroviária de Esportes (AFE).

The team debuted in the 1st division of the Paulista Championship in 1956. It was relegate ten years later, but recovered the following year by winning the 2nd division championship. It remained in the elite for 30 years, but was relegated for the second time in 1996, getting back to the 1st division in 2015, joining the A1 Series of Paulista Championship. In the 60’s, the “Locomotiva”, as it’s known, represented a thorn in the flesh of teams such as Pele’s Santos as it conquered supporters from all over the country.

At the time, the team was a three-time champion of São Paulo State Interior Tourneament (1967-68-69). Along the following decades, Ferroviária carried out great campaigns: 1983 Taça de Ouro (Gold Cup) – 8th place – and also 1985 Campeonato Paulista (São Paulo State Championship) – 4th place. It also won the 2nd division championship (1955-1966), Taça dos Invictos (The Unbeaten Cup) – 1971, A2 Series (2015) and was two-times champion of the Copa Federação Paulista de Futebol (São Paulo State Soccer Federation Cup) – 2006-2017.

Ferroviária Futebol S/A

The idea of the creation of a company to manage the football activities emerged along the crisis through Ferroviária went in 2003. Thus, on November 11th, that year, an assembly was held in order to formally declare the foundation of Ferrovíaria Futebol S/A, as well as to elect its first board of Directors and Administrative Council.
At the time, the team was competing in the B1 Series of the Campeonato Paulista. The goal set by the company was to return to the elite division of São Paulo State football and to reconquer its spot in the national sports scenery. The plan began to work out as early as 2004, when Ferroviária granted access to A3 Series.

In 2006, Ferroviária S/A started yielding results by reaching the title of the Federação Paulista de Futebol – FPF. The team raised the cup by scoring 1 to 1 against Bragantino in Bragança Paulista. However, in 2007, Ferroviária was led back to A2 Series and played the first phase of “Copa do Brasil” (Brazil Cup) against Juventude, ending up in a failure after a home victory by 3 to 1 and a defeat in Caxias do Sul by 2 to 0.

In 2009, the Font Luminosa Stadium has undergone a rebuilding project, and the team had to temporarily transfer its games to the Estádio Municipal do Botânico (Municipal Stadium of Botanico), being, again, demoted to A3 Series.

Soon, however – 2010 – the return to A2 Series took place, after Ferroviária was the runner-up of A3 Series at Campeonato Paulista.
In 2015, after 19 years, the team was finally back to the elite of São Paulo State soccer. Headed by the coach Milton Mendes, Ferroviária was A2 Series Champion, scoring 44 points (14 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats). In 2016, the team competed, again, at Copa do Brasil and was eliminated in the second phase by Fluminense. At Copa da Federação Paulista the Locomotiva won the runner-up, after being surpassed in the finals by XV de Piracicaba.

In 2017, Ferroviária achieved, for the second time, first place at Copa da Federação Paulista beating the Internacional in the finals final, drawing 0-0 in Limeira and winning through penalties at Fonte Luminosa.

Along recent years, Ferroviária Futebol S.A. has been seeking an integration of the main sectors in Araraquara for the development of successful projects in the interior of São Paulo. The goal is to definitively resume its role as protagonist in the state soccer scenery. Through the results achieved in recent seasons, the Locomotiva has brought Araraquara supporters back to the stadium. The achievement of the first division after 19 years, in cluding its stablishment in the Campeonato Paulista are facts that made fans reembrace the team they’d always loved. However, we want more. Fonte Luminosa Stadium

Dr. Adhemar Pereira de Barros stadium, known as Fonte Luminosa, was inaugurated on June 10th, 1951, as an effort of AFE founder, engineer Antônio Tavares Pereira Lima.
The opening game was played against Vasco da Gama, at that time in the spotlight of Brazilian football scenery. The team from Rio de Janeiro ca-me to Araraquara and, showing good performance, beat Ferroviária by 5 to 0. The first goal at Fonte Luminosa was made by Friaça, who was the author of the Brazilian honor goal when defeated by 2 to 1 from Uruguay in the finals of the 1950 World Cup.

In 2009, after a year and four months of rebuilding, the stadium was reinaugurated as the Multipurpose Arena of Fonte Luminosa, the most modern stadium in the interior of São Paulo. In the opening game, couting more than 21,000 supporters as audience, Ferroviária beat Ituano 2-1, with goals from Fernando Luís (the first one in the new arena) and Joel for Ferroviária. Diego Faria scored for Ituano.

CT do Pinheirinho (Pinheirinho Training Center)

Ferroviaria athletes train at the “Olegário Tolói de Oliveira (Dudu)” Training Center (CT) – built within Pinheirinho Ecological Park. Inaugurated on December 7th, 2008, the CT Pinheiri-nho includes five football fields with unofficial measures (70m x 110m), in a to-tal area of 45,000 m2, and with all the necessary infrastructure for athletes, technical staff, audience and press, including locker rooms and bathrooms.

In addition to serving Ferroviária professional team, the CT Pinheirinho is used by the youth system teams, including Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 teams. Thus, all Ferroviária athletes have at their disposal the same structure for training, and that has been crucial for its good performances in championships. The name of the Training Center is a tribute to the midfielder Dudu, a player who was revealed in the amateur football of Araraquara, performing in the youth Araraquara Sports Association (ADA) team and whi shone nationally as a renowned Ferroviária player. At Palmeiras, Dudu took part in the soccer academy and had calls for São Paulo State Team and Brazilian Selection.

Museum

Inaugurated on March 10th, 2010, the Sports and Football Museum has a large portfolio, including jerseys, trophies, photographs, videos, ban-ners, streamers, newspapers and magazines. The top attraction, however, is the rich documentation of Ferroviaria professional football. The museum counts al-so with material on amateur football, other sports and sports celiebrities in town. The environment is themed and decorated with banners showing pictures of teams and athletes who coined the story of football in Araraquara. Currently, there are mo-re than 10 thousand photographs, as well as several other items to be visi-ted with the help of a guide as individuals or in groups. Among other treasures, we can highlight the ball used in the game that confirmed the access of Ferroviaria to A1 Series in 2015, the jersey used by Helcias Pirola, the team player whose performance was crucial to rise the team to the First Division in 1955, as well as a banner celebrating the back to the elite in 1966, autographed by all players. Much of the material is donated by Ferroviária fans, so the museum’s collection keeps growing. Supporters and family members of former athletes who may have significant material on Ferroviária history are encouraged to refer to us for donations.
